Energy & cleantech startup funding and grants
Energy projects are funded nationally by the SFOE Pilot and Demonstration Programme in Switzerland, the 8th Energy Research Programme in Germany and the Klima- und Energiefonds in Austria. At EU level, Horizon Europe Cluster 5 and the Innovation Fund fund clean energy, and EIT InnoEnergy invests in clean-tech start-ups.

Funds pilot and demonstration projects with high energy-saving potential or more use of renewables. SMEs, research institutions and public organisations can apply; support is capped at 50% of non-amortisable costs.

SWEETER
Successor to SWEET, run by the SFOE with the FOEN, funding inter- and transdisciplinary consortia from academia, industry and the public sector. Three calls are planned for 2025–2028.

Innovation projects
Funds technical innovations by SMEs in Switzerland or Liechtenstein with 250 employees or fewer that avoid greenhouse-gas emissions. Maximum CHF 200,000 and no more than 50% of total cost; deadlines are 1 March and 1 September.

Loan guarantees, not grants: the Confederation guarantees bank loans of up to CHF 3 million for up to 10 years to Swiss companies whose new products or processes reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

EIC Accelerator
Funds single start-ups and SMEs, including spin-outs, from EU Member States and Horizon Europe associated countries. It combines a grant (lump sum below €2.5 million) for innovation activities at TRL 6–8 with equity investments of up to €10 million.

Grants of up to EUR 4 million for early-stage research towards breakthrough technologies. Pathfinder Open requires a consortium of at least three independent entities; Pathfinder Challenges also accept single applicants and two-partner consortia.

EIC Transition
Grants of up to EUR 2.5 million to validate and demonstrate a technology and build market readiness. Projects must build on results of an eligible project such as EIC Pathfinder or ERC Proof of Concept; single SMEs, start-ups, spin-offs and consortia can apply.

EIC STEP Scale Up
Equity, not a grant: investments of EUR 10 million to EUR 30 million in 2026 for single SMEs and small mid-caps with fewer than 500 employees in digital and deep tech, clean tech and biotech. A qualified investor must pre-commit to the round.

International R&D projects led by an innovative SME, with partners from at least two Eurostars countries. Each partner is funded by its national body: Innosuisse in Switzerland, BMFTR in Germany (max. 500,000 € for German partners together), FFG in Austria.
